• Greetings!
I got a frantic call at work today that suddenly a whole bunch of my WordPress sites are down with parse errors. Most haven’t been touched in a week or more. What the heck happened that suddenly took out a bunch of my WordPress sites?

It might be plug in related and W3total cache is a suspect, but I don’t know that for sure. I am trying to track down if it is plug in specific, server specific, or community wide.

    Thanks for your help!
    RJB

Most of these sites are static and haven’t been touched in at least a week.

Versions range from 3.2 to 3.8

Are these all on the same server in separate installations? Have you checked with your hosting company?

The ones that I care about are on Site5 shared reseller. I have a second hosting co, and the only WordPress install over there is down with the parser flu too.

The fun part is that I have several fully functional installations on there too. I have looked for common themes and plugins and got stumped other than Askimet and the default theme, 2011. I am still looking for a common element in the failures and haven’t ruled anything out.

As far as Site5 they rolled back a directory a few days and it works fine. I have them working on rollling back the others.

If you think about that for a bit, what might that imply?

You may want to take a few minutes and open an FTP client to inspect the contents of the files that were indicated in the error messages. Sudden errors caused by unexplained edits in WordPress files should be viewed with a very critical eye. Especially on sites running versions of WordPress with known, published vulnerabilities. Double that effort in a shared sever environment.
