    Hi there,

I have updated all plugins on one of my personal blogs this morning and I ran into this error after upgrading to the last version of the plugin (4.0). I cannot activate the plugin anymore.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘[‘ in …/wp-content/plugins/coolclock/includes/class-coolclock.php on line 46

I’m running WordPress 4.9.4-en_GB on a French hosting provider (OVH). I can provide further details if needed.

phpinfo report is available here: https://www.dedef.info/phpinfo.php

Any idea on what I should do with this?

    Cheers,

    G.

Hi G, sorry to hear you are having troubles. They are related to the PHP version. The square bracket is not supported by any PHP version below 5.4. Please note that PHP 5.5 and below are no longer supported and even PHP 5.6 will no longer get security updates by the end of this year… the recommended PHP version for WordPress is 7+

You can log into your OVH Manager and open the Hosting section on the left. Choose your hosting (by domain name) and find on the General Information tab the section Configuration. You’ll see there the Global PHP version setting. Click the button to change the configuration and “Modify current config”, then set the Environment to Stable and the PHP version to anything above 5.5 preferably 7.0 or higher. If you find the site is not working with a high PHP?version, then downgrade one step and test again.

Note that from 7.0 and up, your site will be faster ??

Oh, and make sure under Advanced the “Motor” setting is “php” not phpcgi, and Mode is “production”…
