Parse error when trying to add image button nav bar in custom_functions.php

I’m getting the following error message when trying to save changes to my custom_functions.php file:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting ‘(‘ in /data/22/2/28/87/2517413/user/2757791/htdocs/WordPress/wp-content/themes/thesis_18 2/custom/custom_functions.php on line 55

I’m using the thesis 1.8 theme.
is there a typo in my code or is the tutorial I used to do this totally outdated? Does anyone have a better tutorial for creating an nav bar with images in Thesis Theme?
