Pass data from custom field to $_COOKIE

Is there a way to take the data from a custom field and pass it to the $_COOKIE variable? I can get it to work on a page and its sub pages, but if I navigate back to the home or other pages, it disappears.
I’ve tried coding it one the page, as well as in functions.php and neither seems to work.
Thoughts?
