[Revised] Buggy plugin missing [X] close button; code overlap problems, etc.
-
**UPDATE**
I’m revising my review as of the discovery that grid.css (in ..wppdf/css/) in this plugin contains CSS that directly affects critical text stylesheets; attributing new CSS for h1, hr, .centered, and .wrapper, causing significant changes in the appearance of most any installed theme.I was able to delete the entries for .centered, .wrapper, hr, and h1 from grid.css without (apparently) losing any basic plugin functionality, for this code appears to be leftovers lifted directly from Ali Jafarian’s CSS grid tutorial.
While this remains one of the few stable, free flipbook plugins out there, I’d suggest a .PDF reader over this plugin, especially for newcomers. This plugin does NOT work out of the box, it’s not responsive (don’t even resize your screen when the flipbook is open!), and it’s not particularly good unless you MUST have a flipbook on your site.
**ORIGINAL REVIEW**
There is very little documentation for this plugin, but I chose to use it as it displayed my .PDF files nicer (and more reliably) than any of the other plugins out there (and I could pull my .PDF file directly out of my media bin). However, this plugin is not really usable as packaged. It requires a fix (see below) to be user-friendly for website visitors – and the functions of the plugin remain very limited.
The main problem with this plugin is that it will not open in a lightbox nor does it have a function to close the flipbox window when opened. As designed, the plugin’s shortcode will place a thumbnail on your site which, when clicked, opens the viewer in the same window. However, there is no exit button nor does clicking on the background do anything, neither is there an option for a target=”_blank”-like function to return to the previous page.
I made the effort of examining the code and developed a workaround with an [X] close button that uses Javascript to return to the last known page (https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/once-flipbook-is-open-how-do-you-close-it?replies=2). This makes the plugin reasonably workable for anyone visiting the content on your site.
Since it’s one of the few stable, free flipbox .PDF viewers out there, I consider it passable for the meantime – it’s also the only reason I bothered to come up with a code hack.
With the fix, it is deserving of three stars – but not without it.
