• I am a freelancer and recently, my client gave me a task which was to design a WordPress site. All the setup was already done and my task was only to design the pages.

For 2 days everything worked fine. But on the 3rd day, while I was working, I got a message which said: “Your session has expired. Please log in again”. But after that, I couldn’t log in again. Whenever I enter the password the page said that my password is wrong. I have re-checked the password with my client, but still, we were unable to log in to that site. My client blamed me for this and I had to refund him, which was quite natural.

I still cannot understand how the password got changed and why did I get a “session expired” message.
I have already asked this question on wordpress.com, but they suggested me to post it here since our site was hosted using a custom WordPress installation. I hope that the experts will look into this problem.

  • Someone or something probably reset the password which then caused the session to expire which then locked you out of the system…

For the next time, you might try setting a new username and password with admin privileges just for your use and ask the owner to delete that when your work is done and you’ve been paid. Since the owner will still have their password you’ll be able to continue your work as needed and maybe fix any other issues that arise where your client thinks ‘you broke their site’.

That’s how I do things myself! I’ve had owners clobber their own passwords and accounts… easy enough to fix but I like to say things like ‘Gee, I’m not having any problems myself but I see…’.

Also, if the security ‘nonces’ are changed you’ll get logged out also but the passwords should then still work to get you back in.

Thanks for your response. I have been working with WordPress for quite some time and haven’t yet faced this type of issue. Thanks for the suggestion, from now on this will serve as a new experience for me.
What do you think have caused this? Do plugins have the power to change the password?

Do plugins have the power to change the password?

Sure. Dunno why they would, but technically yes.

Anything changing the password out from under you would also cause the session to expire. So that part makes sense at least.
