Hi very very new to this. Just taken over wp site. Previous person no longer available to ask questions. Have discovered that in settings,Postman SMTP, Configuration – Show all settings, on the first tab page, we have an email address in the Envelope-From email address as well as the same email address has been used for the Username of the Authentication. We want to change the current email address so that the mail being sent out and coming in is coming from the correct area of our Society.
Problem is we do not know what the password was that was used.
Can you advise how we can change this please without stuffing up the web site or making it crash.
I know the password of the email address we want to change it to, just not certain on just how to go about doing it.
I have gone through lots of php files and config but it appears that the person previously never recorded it in the wp-config.php file for safe keeping.

    Regards

  • Hi @gsqwebcoorindator,

There is no way to do this unfortunately. You need to get the SMTP account sorted first. Most hosting packages include mail accounts, which you can us with SMTP – have a look at your cPanel.

PS – You should never keep a copy of passwords in plain text, especially not in a file like wp-config.php! You will run into major security problems – you should remove any passwords ASAP. The exception to this is the DB as this is required for your WP site to function.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind Regards,
    Tim

Many thanks for your answer Tim. We will leave it as it is until we develop a new web site. Nice to know about not keeping the passwords in the wp-config.php file as I had read that that might be a place it would show up. Glad to know the previous person was good at security.
    Appreciate your reply.

    Hi Alisa,

No problem! These forums are a great place to learn more about WordPress, how it works, security, and more. Definitely worth a look around and creating some posts if you still have questions if you are new to WordPress.

    An invaluable tool! ??

    Kind Regards,
    Tim
