Is there an elegant way to make a WP powered blog password protected (using the built-in WP authentication)?

Ideally I would like to use the WP authentication scheme for registered users to access the site, not just the admin section… My goal is to stay away from setting up an .htaccess/HTTP Auth type scheme.

I setup a site a couple of years back with an old version of pMachine. I want to upgrade it to WP but I am unable to find documentation on how to protect the blog via WP. With pMachine I was able to set it up so only registered users who are logged in can see the site content. From what I can find WP seems to only be able to protect individual entries. Searching through the forums has been unsuccessful.

Thanks! Any help would be appreciated.

You could password-protect every post, but if you want to password protect the entire blog, you’ll have to use .htaccess.

Thanks for the quick reply! Even though that is what i did not want to hear ??

WP is great and I was really hoping to use it for a “friends-only” type site. I will see if I can hack away at it and get it to work. If not I will look into something else. If anyone has any other ideas I am all ears…

Any updates on how to password protect the entire site? Would this also include the RSS feed?
