Password Protecting a Staging Site

  • I think what I’m hearing out there is that if I wish to keep search engines from indexing content I must put it into a sub-domain which points to a password protected sub-directory.

    Is this how the resulting URL would look?
    subdomain.rootdirectory.com/passwordprotectedsubdirectory

    no, not at all. Just go to settings->reading and check “discourage search engines”.

    Pro tip: You will forget to uncheck that when you move the site to production, so put a post-it on your monitor now!

    I see a disclaimer there stating: It is up to search engines to honor this request. I believe when content is pw protected they have no choice in the matter. I’d like to be sure. So I re-submit my question.

    Can I assume each subsequent page or post will have that URL with its own subdirectory extended out beyond? A la: subdomain.rootdirectory.com/passwordprotectedsubdirectory/newpost

    One more question. If I password protect the subdirectory appearing right after the root, does that then protect the entire subdomain?

    It protects that directory and the ones below.
