The issue was caused by an outdated version of All In One WP Security & Firewall plugin. After updating the plugin to the latest version the error is gone.

still, the issue is there. I tried using a user email to reset the password, same error appearing

This definitely is a plugin conflict issue. Try deactivating every other plugins on your site leaving just ProfilePress. Test and let us know if it works.
