Past events showing up in Site Search (WP default search)

I have seen forum postings about omitting past events from search by going to Settings > Pages > Event Lists/Archives and setting an Events Page and setting the scope to Future Events.

I’ve done that, but the problem I’m having is when using the site’s WordPress search function, the results don’t seem to have anything to do with the Events page and they do not seem to honor the scope setting. The events are displayed as posts along with other pages/posts that contain the search term, which is good….but is there a way to omit past events without having to manually go to the event post and unpublish it after the event has occurred?
