I have successfully pasted to a jetpack gallery from a URL on a PC w/ Firefox.

My client, OTOH, is on a Mac (lastest OS, latest Chrome Browser)- and they’re not getting the option to paste to a gallery from a URL (I had them share their desktop to be sure).

    What gives?

They have the option to paste a single image to a post, but not to a gallery. And pasting from URL to post does not put the image in the media library.

We’re both on 5.1.1 using the Classic Editor.

    Thx in advance, etc etc

    Hi there,

To gain more clarity on your issue, can you provide the URL of the post/page where your client having the issue? Any attempt to use the block editor and see if there was a difference? To rule out any plugin conflict issue, is your site setup the same as your clients?

    Have you tried gallery shortcode?:

Let me know and I’d be happy to look further into this for you.

    Are you on a Mac?

The first three images have been inserted from a URL. By a Mac user.

The image URLs are copied from Pinterest.

The second set of images are in a carousel and have been added by a PC user (myself). They also appear in the Media Library.

No attempt has been made to user the Block Editor – apart from the initial experience when it was installed automatically.

If it’s between not using paste from URL to a gallery with the Classic Editor and using the Block Editor, I’m afraid we are inclined to not paste from URL.

I’m a life-long Mac user, as are most of us who work on Jetpack.

What is the URL of the image you’re unable to insert?

    (@fb2ts)

    Hotdog!

    The image is from :

    https://i.pinimg.com/564x/87/82/8f/87828ffe497fe4c8c0b907c2b67e4d04.jpg

When I right click on the first image my client inserted from their Mac with a url, to copy its location, I get

    https://i2.wp.com/i.pinimg.com/564x/87/82/8f/87828ffe497fe4c8c0b907c2b67e4d04.jpg?resize=564%2C752&ssl=1

When I grab the same image url from where I inserted it into a gallery (from my PC), I get

    https://i2.wp.com/claudiamcdonough.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/87828ffe497fe4c8c0b907c2b67e4d041.jpg?fit=564%2C752

My client is an artist, not a web developer – so there is a chance it’s a user error. But it would be great for their productivity, I think, if we could get this to work.

Are you by any chance also a Chrome user?

So, all three are the same image, that’s good.

What you’re describing is odd though. Would you please give us a link to the post or page with the problem?

The link to the post with the problem is

    https://claudiamcdonough.com/testing-image-journal/

The steps that work from my PC are

    1. Click Add Media
    2. Create Gallery
    3. Upload Files
    4. Select Files
    5. Open second window/tab.
    6. From Image Location: Open Image and Right Click on it.
    7. Select Copy Image Location
    8. Return to WP tab and Paste URL into address box and Click Open
    9. Keep Inserting from URL or select from Media Library
    10. Click Create New Gallery
    11. Add to Gallery or Insert Gallery
    12. Update blog (find button on your right)
    13. View post (top left)

    Uh-oh. 13 steps! Maybe that’s the problem.

    Hi there,

    8. Return to WP tab and Paste URL into address box and Click Open

Do you mean you paste the image URL in the File Name field of the File Upload pop-up window created by Windows itself?

That is indeed possible in Windows, but not on Mac, but that has nothing to do with Jetpack. That is a difference between Windows’s file manage, Windows Explorer, and Mac OS’s Finder file manager. Finder does not allow you to type in the file name of a file like that, so there’s also nowhere you’d be able to paste a URL. That’s not something we have any ability to change.

The Insert from URL option that appears in the Add Media modal in the editor is something completely different from that, and can only be used for adding single images at a time.

    (@fb2ts)

    I suspected as much.

So unMacLike though, isn’t it? Not to mention so unWindowsLike. Seems like the reverse ought to be true.

Plus, displaying an image using a URL is so simple in html. And this is something that WP does automagically for single images – just with cutting and pasting. No Insert Media necessary.

Why would it be so impossible to do it with a gallery?

Is WP making a copy of the image pasted singly, on i2wp.com? Or just keeping a record of the URL and masking it? What’s the logic behind that? Is it a speed and reliability issue? Or a big data doodad?

Why does the gallery have to make a copy of images in the content/uploads folder? If it’s grabbing the image from i2wp.com anyway, for the single image, why can’t it grab it that way for the gallery?

Perhaps the answer is: easier said than done. But. I’d like to understand it better, if it’s a matter of a short phrase or two.

Either way, thank you everyone for fielding my questions so promptly and efficiently.

Thank you also for the wicked awesomeness that is WP.

What you’re describing our image CDN: https://jetpack.com/support/site-accelerator/

When an image appears in your content, we serve it from our CDN instead to speed up your site’s load time.

That is also neither a product of pasting the image vs upload the image, it affects all images in your content.
