    Hi there,

Why is it that when I copy/paste content from any site onto mine, the images don’t get added to media library upon publishing the post?

Instead, they are solely shown within the newly created post itself, linking each image back to the original source (see “Open Image in New Tab”).

I feel like this makes no sense and needs fixing. Any image(s) pasted into Gutenberg should be added to the media library automatically.

There’s a plugin that promises help with that, but that functionality should be the default. I’m surprised WordPress hasn’t tackled that yet.

My host, by the way, blocks said plugin from being installed due to “security issues”. You might wanna look into that too.

    Thanks!

  • If you copy the IMAGE ITSELF (or from a document in which the image is embedded in the document — and not linked from a webpage), the image will be added to the WordPress media library. That’s because the image (and only the image) is in your computer’s memory… WordPress has no knowledge of the source the image was copied from and therefore cannot link to the source.

At least that’s the default behaviour of the block editor that comes with WordPress (I just tested and confirmed this on a fresh WordPress site with only the default theme and no plugin installed).

On the other hand, if you either copied the IMAGE URL (not the image itself) or TEXT WITH IMAGE from a web page (or from a document in which the image is linked from a webpage and not embedded directly in the document), then in these cases, it’s only the IMAGE’S URL that is in your computer’s memory, not the actual image. And that’s what WordPress receives when pasted.

Thanks for the super quick response, George. What a service!

This all makes sense, but I feel like the images should still be added to the media library when copying content (images + text) from an external source (website, document etc.).

Maybe this has been blocked to prevent misuse, but currently copying content from an external source is quite a pain when each image has to be uploaded individually / manually for the content copied.

Anyways, would be great if you could pass on this feedback.

    The ticket can be closed.

Thanks again for the fast reply. Have a great weekend!
