• Hello, we manage this site and I’ve noticed that it keeps getting traffic that matches this same pattern. It looks for apple touch icons. there are 8 different ones and then it repeats. After a while of having no success it will stop for a little bit and then pick up with some other server somewhere else in the world. It will be in the UK one time then the next China and then Russia, then Taiwan and jumps all over. So now I started blocking them and they now are running through pages that might exist, like author bios but we do not have them in this site. So it will look 4 or 5 times for that then go on to a new file. All of this traffic is pointless and is now search engines. Should I just keep blocking them?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • From the web:
    About Apple touch icons
Similar to the Favicon, the apple-touch-icon.png is a file used for a web page icon on the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. When someone bookmarks your web page or adds your web page to their home screen this icon is used. If this file is not found these Apple products will use the screen shot of the web page, which often looks like no more than a white square.

    Hi @frankmatt2018,

Safari will automatically attempt to fetch an icon when visiting your website for the first time.

They will go in order (until it successfully obtains an icon):

    – /apple-touch-icon-57×57-precomposed.png
    – /apple-touch-icon-57×57.png
    – /apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png
    – /apple-touch-icon.png

You can choose to upload a custom icon for apple devices, which would make the 404 errors go away. (Upload a file named apple-touch-icon.png in the document root)

    Dave
