I am completing a live order, paying through PayPal in-context and all is going perfectly well.

After the payment has gone through the customer is returned to their basket with an error that says

    Payment error:
An error occurred while processing your PayPal payment. Please contact the store owner for assistance.

But the payment went through fine and the order shows up as processing when the customer goes to the ‘my orders’ screen.

After payment customer is returned to:

    domain.co.uk/checkout/?woo-paypal-return=true&token={token}&PayerID={payer_id}

Both the token and the payer_id look perfectly valid.

What could be the reason the customer is being taken to their basket with an error rather than to the ‘successful order’ screen?

    Hey there!

There are a few things things you can do to look into this:

    1. Check the notes on the admin order page to confirm that the PayPal transaction was completed successfully

    2. Check the PayPal logs via FTP to see if anything funny is noted there – you can see the location of the logs on the PayPal Express Checkout payment gateway settings

    3. If you confirm that PayPal is working correctly, then it is mostly a conflict with the theme or another plugin. The best way to test this is to switch to a Twenty * theme and disable all plugins except for WooCommerce and PayPal Express Checkout.

    Hi,

I have the same error, but payment does not go through. I get a cancelled order email notification.

Could the problem also be a conflict with the theme or another plugin, as above? Or any other fix advice?

    Many thanks!

    Help!

Did you ever resolve this issue?

I have the exact same error happening and people are purchasing items 2 and even 3 times thinking their order didn’t go through. If anyone knows of a solution PLEASE share.

I’m currently having the exact same issue as biminico – I get emailed to say there was a cancelled order, and in the checkout the user gets the error ‘An error occurred while processing your PayPal payment. Please contact the store owner for assistance.’

The PayPal payment isn’t actually made, and so my issue is slightly different to Georgey B’s (as described in the OP).

I’m running a brand-new installation of WooCommerce and have the PayPal and PayPal Express options enabled, but no other payment methods. The users get the same error using either PayPal or PayPal Express.

(My site is thankfully not live at the moment, but I would like to start sales in a few days…)

I have tried using a few separate WooCommerce PayPal plugins, but none worked…

I have just installed the ‘WooCommerce PayPal Powered by Braintree Gateway’ plugin and have just gone through the lengthy process of signing up for a Braintree account… hopefully that’ll work once the account is approved…

I would appreciate any suggestions people may have for getting PayPal to work.

I’m having the exact same issue. I don’t know what could be wrong…

FYI, I managed to resolve this issue by resolving a separate issue I was having with PayPal.
Simply put, I created an entirely new PayPal account. Doing so resolved the issue discussed here, and the other issue I was having.

Further details on page three, here (my username there is DavidHunter66).

    Hope this helps…
