As I understand, you’re seeing An error occurred, please try again or try an alternate form of payment. error on the checkout page of your site. You have the Square payment gateway activated.

I’d recommend checking the following:

– Please ensure that the Square payment method is set up per the instructions here: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/woocommerce-square/#section-5
– Ensure that WooCommerce and Square are up to date
– If the issue persists, could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”.? Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

I’ve taken the steps you mentioned above and Woo and Square are up to date and seem to be talking to each other (verified by a product sync). And yes, the error you indicated is exactly I’m getting.

Hello @sacsmitty,

Checking your site, some errors showed up in the front end. I also didn’t find any recent reports about the same error so this is most likely just a plugin or theme conflict.

The best way to determine this is to:

• Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
• Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
• Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not comfortable doing all of this on the live version of your site, you can create a staging environment using WP-STAGING.

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

After sometime of troubleshooting I’ve all but given up. PayPal was easy to setup but I am still struggling with Square even after following all the suggestions mentioned above. Same error message.

Many payment gateways require it. We strongly recommend it. And customers visiting your WooCommerce store see it as a sign of trustworthiness and expect to see the padlock in the address bar when browsing, buying, and entering their account and payment details.

I’m familiar with SSL and when I made my post this was in a development environment. It is now in production with SSL and the issue remains regardless of SSL. I’ll check again this morning and take your suggestion and try one more time. At this point though, I can’t change my theme. :/
