Payments go through but: “Sorry, trouble retrieving payment receipt.”

I’ve set up EDD, done a test purchase and the user got the dreaded error:
“Sorry, trouble retrieving payment receipt.”
Also, no email was sent to the user.
But the payment is listed as completed in EDD, and the money correctly appeared in the paypal account.
When I send a ‘test’ email using the button Downloads>Settings>Emails>Purchase Receipts it works.
But when I try to send an actual email to the user using Downloads>Payment History>Resend Purchase Receipt button, no email is received.
Is it because I have not written a custom email – under Downloads>Settings>Emails>Purchase Receipts? I have left the box blank in the hope it will send a default email.
Any ideas how to troubleshoot this?
