PayPal Standard Cancellation Error

I have a client website with some problematic behaviour. All PayPal orders are getting Cancelled even though payment is going through and they should not be Cancelled.
Issues:
Cancelled order emails are never sent – is this a bug?
Orders with PayPal are getting made from the perspective of a customer though I am assuming they also don’t get an email. And the order is cancelled. PayPal gets the payment and PayPal emails my client so he can deal with the order.
Here is the order note:Unpaid order cancelled – time limit reached. Order status changed from Pending payment to Cancelled.
As a temporary fix due to the high fees of PayPal and the issue we are now using Stripe but would like to offer PayPal for those who prefer the ‘security’ of it. Thank you for any insight. I am curious also to know if you test your cancelled order emails coming through ok?
