Paypal Standard issue

    PayPal Standard breaks the thank you page displaying the following message instead of regular thank you page with important information about the order (since WooCommerce v7.9, still broken in v8.0.1):

    To view this page, you must either?login?or verify the email address associated with the order.

    From user’s perspective especially when thank you page is styled this looks like page is broken and it wipes trust in the brand. I understand PayPal Standard is no longer visible by default for new setups, but I was not even aware running an old store that this is the case. Worst part – 0 warnings after upgrading to 7.9 that this is going to happen. How many other payment methods are affected by this breaking change??? The worst part some of the providers don’t even provide test credentials or those expire making regular/automated testing for such cases nearly impossible.

    I’ve added the following to functions.php, but it does not help:

    add_filter( ‘woocommerce_order_email_verification_required’, ‘__return_false’ );

    It appears that PayPal button to return to merchants website acts like a form submit button posting data back to thank you page. Copying link and reopening in different browser tab works, but returning from PayPal always shows the form.

    I’m aware of WooCommerce PayPal Payments plugin as a replacement, but I’m still dealing with the damage done by hundreds of empty orders created by that plugin after also upgrading to the latest version…

    Is there any solution to get PayPal standard working again without downgrading WooCommerce?

    Hello @mb00,

    I’m really sorry to hear about the potential revenue you’ve missed out on due to this issue. Would you mind trying a test order using Cash on Delivery (COD) or another payment method? Just to confirm if this is indeed related to the PayPal standard feature.

    If this doesn’t happen with COD, please consider switching to our new full-stack PayPal solution. It’s as easy to set up as any other payment gateway, and we have a handy step-by-step guide for you right here.

    I’ve also flagged this issue to our developers for review, as I’ve noticed similar cases. We can’t provide a definite timeline of when they will review the report, as issues are prioritized based on several factors. You can subscribe to the report from the sidebar to stay updated.

    It does not happen with COD.

    I actually downgraded WooCommerce version, but this change might solve the issue, if it was not part of 8.0.1 release (as problem was still there):

    As mentioned in initial post PayPal return button is actually form submission button that posts data back and as the check is done above the filter, it’s simply impossible to disable that new functionality using filter because filter is never triggered.

    Re: WooCommerce Paypal Payments, this issue was even more serious (also mentioned in initial post) so we had to switch plugin off and just wait for things to get bit more stable there.

    Thank you for verifying that the issue does not appear when COD is selected as the payment method.

    I understand that, meanwhile a fix is released for the issue reported here, a workaround has been suggested.

    Furthermore, the fix for issue #39479 over on GitHub (that you are indicating might solve your issue) is to be included with WooCommerce version 8.1.0.

    Just to clarify, downgrading WooCommerce version (to version 7.9.0, from what I gather) has resolved the issue at your store, whilst 8.1.0 is still pending to be released?
