Our website is successfully using GiveWP and PayPal Standard to receive donations to our charitable organization. However, WordPress is displaying a message that PayPal Standard is being deprecated, and we need to switch to PayPal Donations.

The first time I tried to convert our existing PayPal business account, I got through all the prompts, but at the end, it asked about creating a new account, which I didn’t think I wanted to do (I just wanted to convert an existing one), so I closed the window.

On subsequent attempts, when I got to the prompt about identifying the owner, I got an error message telling me to click Edit, but the Edit link did not work.

I tried contacting PayPal by phone and that just took me down an automated messaging system rabbit hole. I did at one point get a phone call from PayPal, but I didn’t answer at the time, and the phone number they left got me nowhere. I also don’t find their website helpful.

I’m hoping you can provide some assistance!

    Hey @sdarnowsky

Is the number you called 888-350-2387?

That should get you to the correct PayPal department, according to my internal contacts at PayPal.

I wish we could be of more assistance from our side, but everything that happens between clicking on “Connect to PayPal” and actually being connected is handled by the team there.

Let me know if you’re still having issues.

Be aware there is also a bug in GiveWP with connected Paypal you have CreditCard or Paypal buttons and if you click on the paypal without filling in the required Name and email the paypal screen opens up and disappears without any warning while when you click on Credit card Donate button, the system highlights the required fields and shows a msg that those are required.

@benmeredithgmailcom You are an angel for giving me a number that finally let me get hold of a representative! Unfortunately, because the PayPal account is not under my name, they wouldn’t help me. I did re-read the instructions in the setup wizard and realized I had to give information about both an executive and an owner, which makes no sense for a religious organization, but I tried adding an owner (same person as the executive). I’ve gotten a spinning circle for the past five minutes or so now, so I’m not sure if it’s still verifying the information or just hung.

If PayPal Standard is going to continue to work indefinitely, then I won’t worry about setting up PayPal Donations. But if there is a sunset date for that, then I can ask our executive to call the number you provided. Unfortunately, he’s not familiar with our website, but perhaps I can walk him through that part.

Again, I really appreciate your assistance!

They have not announced a date, but it’s definitely going to eventually be sunset, so it’s worth getting that executive on a call with them, and walking through that process sooner than later.

Better to fix the issue before there’s urgency, for sure!
