Paypal TLS 1.2? Please help!

  • Hi guys, I’m new here and yes I am useless when it comes to technical stuff!

    I have an ecommerce store using Virtue theme / Woocommerce, with a domain hosted on a family member’s 1&1 account here in the UK, so I have no access to the server/FTP or anything, and the family member is refusing to work with me which is not helping matters. It’s literally the most basic hosting ever that I pay ￡10 a year for.

    Anyway, yesterday I had The Email of Doom from Paypal warning that because of the whole encryption upgrade business I will likely no longer be able to process payments through my site. This is my business and my only income so understandably I’m quite anxious.

    Can someone tell me in very plain English what it is I need to do? And is the upshot that I need to pay a monthly hosting fee, and get an SSL cert and all that? Would love to know as I’m struggling here.

    What does the “email of doom” say? If it says you need to change TLS settings, then you need to contact the host, as that’s not anything at the WordPress level. If it’s simply saying your site needs to be running with an SSL certificate, then you can probably get one for free, but again, it’s done through your hosting.

    According to https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/article/why-do-i-need-to-upgrade-my-system-to-tls-1.2-faq3898, “If your website is hosted by a third-party, work with your web hosting company or ecommerce software provider.”

    Just as a matter of good practice, if you’re hosting is through a family member who won’t work with you, it’s probably a good business decision to get your own hosting.
