(Why they did this: so I know how to avoid it in the future.) For now, more importantly, how do I fix it?
    Thanks

So it seems the “bad” pages are the image attachment pages, which somehow usurped the original permalink for the content page.
For the “good” page, the image attachment page has the -2 on the permalink.
How and why I do not know.

All right, found my own question and answer from 11 months ago.

It seems that somehow, when I update a page, the image on the page is creating an “image attachment page” that steals the original permalink, and then a ” -2″ gets appended to the original content pages.

If someone can explain this behavior to me so I can stop it, I would appreciate it, so I’ll leave this question open for a bit.

Meanwhile I have deleted the new image attachment pages and renamed my content pages back to their original permalinks, so the site is working now. (The last six links in my original question are no longer as described above, the “bad pages” are now fixed and the -2 pages deleted.)
