    Hi,

Background: I have products under multiple categories. And Permanent link uses “category” as baseline for each URL. Lets say my product belongs to cat1 and cat2, so permanent links is either: mysite/cat1/product or mysite/cat2/product

Question 1) I am not being able to choose whether permalink is “mysite/cat1/product” or “mysite/cat2/product”. How can I do this?

In other sites, I have seen the following: when assigning categories to a product, there was an option “Set as primary” (or similar), and that was the chosen category for permalink. In my site, I do not have this option. I dont understand if this is a feature of WooCommerce or I need an adicional plugin.

Question 2) I do not understand which is the criteria used by WooCommerce to select either one or the other.

Question 3) I noticed that permanent link changes over time. For the same product, at first it was “mysite/cat1/product” and after some time it turned to be “mysite/cat2/product”. I think this happens when I update something related to categories (name, add another category, etc).

—> This is really a Problem for SEO and ranking in search engines. Any help?

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

There was a question about this situation/functionality in the WooCommerce core plugin repository, with a reply from the developers here:
    https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/issues/23568

As described in the post, there is no built-in functionality to choose which category to use when a product has multiple categories. Also, as you may have suspected, that “Set as Primary” option that you mentioned is not a part of the core WooCommerce plugin either.

I think to be able to really set things up the way you want them to be, it would be necessary to use a plugin. Doing a search for “WooCommerce permalink manager” provides results for several third party plugins that look like they may provide the functionality you are looking for (setting a primary category).

    I hope that helps!
