• I’m trying to set up my permalinks. I have the format set as /%postname%/. I updated the .htaccess to reflect this. I made my first post, and the permalink is not working. Does wordpress automatically generate post pages, or do I need to add something to make it automatically generate the permalink? Where does wordpress post new entries to by default? I can’t find the entry anywhere in my directories, and I can’t seem to find a place where I can modify it to post to a certain directory (for archive purposes). Please help- Alex Pelan

  • In WP everyting (your posts, your Pages created with WP, the comments) are stored in the database. No files. No directories.
That permalinks structure you’ve tried probably won’t work – just a feeling… Try something longer with more data.
If the .htaccess file is really updated, you don’t have to do anything: it will take care of it.

You really should use the permalink structure that is suggested on the Permalinks page to start with. Using your scheme is just not enough for WP to determine which post it needs to point to since Apache’s rewrite rules are being used to create these links.

    So try the longer: /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

Actually, when I visited your site I noticed that the Archives link (year/month) goes to a real directory. Which makes me wondering whether you’ve read the answers you got to your other (related) thread:
