I have recently published my website but have a few problems. The main one I think is to do with permalinks.

If I search for https://www.pulseandpea.com on my Mac I get my homepage as I constructed it. However, if I navigate away from the home page to another page on my site, and then return to the homepage I have problems such as large white gaps in places that there shouldn’t be any. The website address also changes to https://69.89.31.141/~pulsean1/.

However, in Chrome the problems are the other way round. On initial search (www.pulseandpea.com) the home page shows several issues, such as missing links, social media and missing icons in the header and the main content of the page. If I navigate away and then return to the homepage the web address is changed to https://69.89.31.141/~pulsean1/ and the problems disappear!!

I don’t want the web address to be similar to an IP address and I certainly don’t want the problems I have got with my website pages. Do I need to alter the permalinks and if so how do I do this? Can anyone help?

    David

PS I am using Highend Childs Theme

  • It appears you have the URL “https://69.89.31.141/~pulsean1/” in the WordPress database, likely because you (or some so-called 1-click installer) used this address for the initial installation of WordPress.

So we need to change all occurrences of https://69.89.31.141/~pulsean1/ to https://www.pulseandpea.com/

If you have access to the admin dashboard, head over to SETTINGS => GENERAL and make sure both WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) have the correct address (https://www.pulseandpea.com/)

Next, you’ll need to change all occurrences of the address https://69.89.31.141/~pulsean1/ that may have been associated with images and other files you’ve uploaded to the correct URLs.

Again, if you have access to the admin dashboard, the easiest way to get the job done is to use a plugin like Velvet Blues Update URLs (https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/)

If you don’t have access to the WordPress admin dashboard, you may want to contact your host (Bluehost) for assistance … though I won’t hold my breath for that host’s support.

Hi, superb help. I followed it to the letter and the problem was sorted in two minutes.

    Thanks

    Hi @lymph1,

I’m glad I could be of help to you.

And because I like to over-deliver, here are two other issues I found on your site that you may want to address:

    1) Some resources still have the IP address URLs. Examples include the BEE-YOURSELF image, the ORANGE-SYMPHONY flower image, SWEETS-FOR-MY-SWEET corn image. These are all background images. Since you have updated all the image URLs in the database, fixing this can be as simple as removing these background images (from the theme’s options page or wherever you configured these background images) and re-adding them.

    2) Your site and hosting already support HTTPS. So you may want to switch the entire site to HTTPS. To do this, you basically have to repeat what you did the last time, except this time you’re swapping https://pulseandpea.com/ for https://pulseandpea.com/ (kindly note the S in the second one).

You probably should do (2) first, so that the background images you insert in (1) will all be HTTPS.

And you can use this website https://www.whynopadlock.com/ to test for “mixed content” (ie when you have HTTP resources loaded on an HTTPS site) and address all reported issues. Be sure to test different representative pages, not just the homepage.

    Cheers!

Outstanding! All done. The why no padlock site was very simple to use and gave me a load of valuable information. I have been able to make sure the Bluehost guys sorted out SSL to make the site secure and I found another image that needs to be changed.

Simple! Really effective customer service. Thanks very much.

So, can I ask one more thing. Why no padlock suggests that I do the following. AS you know I have checked the site as best I can. Is it sade to click the Go Ahead Activate SLL button or do I need to do anything else about the .css and .js files?

Almost ready to migrate to SSL!
Some things can’t be done automatically. Before you migrate, please check for:
Http references in your .css and .js files: change any https:// into //
Images, stylesheets or scripts from a domain without an SSL certificate: remove them or move to your own server.
