Permalinks

How exactly are they not working? I mean, is WP not creating an htaccess or is it just that the permalinks load but the page isn’t found or none of that or something else?

Also, a link to your site might be helpful.

It mentions something at the bottom about a htaccess file.

Very new and going through everything step by step, but this has stumped me.

I tried making a notepad 1.htaccess and uploading it, renaming to .htaccess and doing the 777 bit, but must be missing something as it says the same thing.

If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.

Hmm. If you don’t already have an htaccess, WP should create it on its own automatically.

If it’s spitting out code for you, it’s having an issue somewhere with writing to the file you’ve uploaded. The code it wants you to select is what you would have to manually add to the htaccess yourself. So try that and see if it works for you…or have you done that already? I’m a little confused.

Now, set your desired permalink from wordpress admin area and add this code in htaccess of your blog/site:

Hi Shane,

I went through all of that already (following your link).

I could not find htaccess file anywhere. So i tried to make my own. I am also new to WP and the information is somewhat alien to me.

I am not sure where you put the code above. I made a txt file and copied and pasted the code in to it. I then uploded the file and changed to 777.

I am not sure if this is the right way or the code goes somewhere else.

I am also not sure where to put the txt file, i just uploaded in to the root on the server and changed the permissions. I must be wrong somewhere as it still did not work.

There may be a htaccess file already there, where would i find it if it is?

Sorted it.

Did the same thing that i have tried many times and this time it worked allowing 666 in properties.

That was the only difference???

Will 666 be OK to leave or do i need to change to something stronger?
