permalinks don’t work

Hi. I’m new to wordpress, and everthing seems to work fine except permalinks.
My trackback links look like this:
https://domain.com/wp-trackback.php?p=4Which generates an error page, pointing to the correct URL:
https://domain.com/?p=4With date and name based permalinks enabled I get:
https://domain.com/2006/05/26/education/trackback/Which generates an error page, pointing to the correct URL:
https://domain.com/2006/05/26/education/Can someone point me in the right place….I’m on a linux box, and I have the same problems on separate domains, both with 2.02 as well as wpmu
