• Hi, I want to set up permalinks for my site https://www.brightontuition.com, but am having trouble. They are pages, so I don’t need to use permalink templates as far as I know. I read in the documentation:

Please note: You never, ever put your site url in the permalinks slot. You must use one of the structure tags, or a combination of tags only.

What do they mean by permalinks slot? Do they mean the bit in the edit page screen where I can costomise my permalink?
Secondly, I don’t want to put my url there, just the page name, to go at the end of the url, like most websites. Can I do this? I don’t want to use structured tags, just for a few pages.
Anyhow, when I have changed the customize permalink setting on the edit page page, the page doesn’t show correctly. My permalinks settings are currently on Day and name. When I change them, my pages don’t show either, although the header does. I don’t really want to use structure tags, and I don’t understand them to be honest.
How can I just add a searchable page name to suffix onto the url, which is searchable by robots and appears in search results etc? I can’t change the page names, because then they wouldn’t fit on the nav bar, although that is a last resort.

I would really appreciate help on this,
    yours
    Robin

ps I also tried yoast for seo, and tried the rewrite function, to see if that made any difference, but it didn’t.

  • Did you try using /%postname%/ as the permalink setting?

Thanks for your quick reply Jonathan.
I posted the tag in the custom text box and customized the page permalink on the page edit page, to a ‘prettier’ name, and then no longer got a page not found, but the page loaded with the original url, and no sign of the pretty permalink in the address bar.
    Any ideas?

Ps. I have yoast, but it doesn’t seem to matter whether I have the force rewrite titles check box checked or not.
I have tried pages which aren’t my main page, and there is no difference. I have tried adding a trailing slash, and without, and it makes no difference.
