• From what I’m reading in the forum here, if you use Windows, Permalinks won’t work. Is this a true statement?

  • You can use Windows… just the server where your blog is hosted shouldn’t be Windows if you want to use permalinks.

If Apacha has mod_rewrite, it sould work… or am I wrong ?

So many people don’t know what they’re talking about….

If you use IIS to host your WordPress blog, you will probably have trouble with permalinks unless you purchase 3rd party software. And even then, you’ll likely need to update the rewrite rules manually, which can be annoying. I think the index.php/ permalink trick works with IIS, but I’m not sure.

If you use Apache to host your WordPress blog (on Windows), permalinks (mod_rewrite) works just fine.

I host around 25 WP blogs on Apache 2 with PHP 5 using MySQL 4.1 on a Windows 2000 Server – never had any problems with it (aside from a brief ubergoof regarding spam blacklisting).

In short, using Windows on your own computer doesn’t affect your ability to use permalinks; what matters to WordPress is the computer that your website is hosted at (the place you upload your website to). Permalinks rely on the “mod_rewrite” module, so if the server doesn’t have that you can’t use permalinks.

Can anybody tell me what Permalinks are? I think it’s got something to do with my problem… And can you host WordPress with IIS without Apache? But with PHP and MySQL?

Oh and just to let you know… As you know, when you log in, it redirects you to https://[whatever]/wp-admin/ It just doesn’t work. IT says it’s FORBIDDEN and when I enable directory listing, it just lists the contents of the directory which didn’t help… I think it’s got to do with apache…

    PLEASE HELP!
