Permalinks Question — way to confirm they’re enabled?

    Hi there,

    Maybe I’m dense or it’s my ad/hd but I’ve searched through all the permalink posts and I don’t know how to tell if mine are enabled right now. this post says they’re automatically enabled in WordPress: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/46613?replies=6
    If so, why do so many plug-ins say permalinks have to be enabled? That’s the only reason as a new blogger I even need them — I want to use staticjack, and a couple of other plug-ins that require permalinks. They don’t have to be pretty or fancy.

    So far, I cut and paste the example in the permalink section under the options area, and I reset the chmod on htaccess so it could update automatically for me.

    However, I still don’t have little tags on posts that say ‘permalink’ on them, as I’ve seen on many blogs, but then again, I’ve also seen wordpress blogs without them.

  • Mine don’t have the #. The easiest way to tell is update your permalinks in admin – making note of the structure you chose.
    Make a test post and click the archive link for it in the sidebar or the full story link on the main page. If the URI in the address bar of your browser is the same as the permalinks you set up, you’re done.

    I imagine they’re on, however.

    Forget the ‘permalink’ tag, as that is something that’s added by certain themes.

    You know you have pretty permalinks working if you were to hover over the title of a post and see something like: blog.com/archives/2006/03/13/your-post-title in the status bar of your browser.

    If you just see blog.com/?p=<post number> then you don’t have it enabled properly.
