For the last few days, when I make a change to an already published post where I have already created a custom permalink, the permalink reverts back to the old one after a click update. This doesn’t happen with every post, but with random ones.

For example, I created this post with a the following custom URL in 2018. The permalink has been the same since the post was published:
    https://www.emilyluxton.co.uk/canada/trek-america-review-mountie

Today, I made a small change to the article, fixing a couple of typos. I clicked save, and suddenly the URL had switched to: https://www.emilyluxton.co.uk//2018/07/05/canada-trek-america-review-mountie/

I changed it back and clicked save, and it went back to the custom URL no problem.

It seems to be happening at random so I don’t know how to recreate the issue in order to work out what’s causing it!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • The same problem with me since the WordPress Update 5.5

Yes, same here. The problem is that already existing custom permalinks get overwritten with the default link every time a post is saved.

You can see it as soon as you start editing a post. The custom permalink field is already reverted to the default link. If you insert your custom (old) link by hand and save, everything is fine. If you don’t, well, you just overwrite it.

Also happened after the WP 5.5 update.

    Hi @emilyluxton @thomaslaber @volker77

Sorry for having this issue and thank you reaching out to me.

Can anyone of you tell me the scenario by which I can generate this issue on my end? As per @emilyluxton, it is happening with random posts so not sure what is the uniqueness in those random posts.

I really wants to help but for that I need help from you to generate this issue on my end.

    Regards,
    Sami

I just disabled the plugin “Disable Gutenberg” and I think this fixed it for me.

@thomaslaber Thank you for providing the feedback. I will check the permalinks with “Disable Gutenberg” plugin.

@volker77 @emilyluxton Please confirm whether you are using “Disable Gutenberg” plugin or not. If you are using it, then please disable the plugin and check does that fixes the issue for you or not.

    Regards,
    Sami

@sasiddiqui I’m not using that plugin. I’ve not had the issue the last few times I’ve updated a post, I was hoping that meant you had resolved it. I will keep an eye out and see if I can work out a pattern with which posts it’s happening with!

I don’t use the plugin either. Many errors in the WP 5.5 update could be fixed by the plugin “jQuery Migrate Helper”.
But I can no longer test this because I have now returned to WP 5.4 because the update caused many more errors.

    Many thanks for your effort
    Volker

    Hi guys,
I’m also recently having the same issue as @emilyluxton in that posts seems to be randomly saving incorrectly and reverting back to an old permalink. I do suspect it is happening more with “older” posts (ones published in 2016, 2017, 2018) rather than newly published posts.

I do use a plugin called https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/revisionize/, which I know is not totally “up-to-date” yet always seemed to work fine before WordPress 5.5.

Sorry, not sure how much help I can be but please ask and I will see if I can assist!
    Cheers

@emilyluxton @volker77 Thank you for your confirmations. I did some testing with “Disable Gutenberg” plugin but not able to produce this issue.

@emilyluxton If it happens again then please try to catch some pattern or any information so that will help me to further debug this issue.

@volker77 In WP 4.4, does everything working fine related to the Permalink and you are not facing any issues, right?

@mrprezident I am looking for a pattern or test use case by which I can generate this issue on my end. I don’t have any older posts on my test site so cannot check this. I will try to replicate this use case on any other site.

    Regards,
    Sami

Since I went back to WorPress 5.4 I have no more problems with the plugin.
Custom Permalinks worked fine for me for many years and I don’t want to miss it.

    Hi @cg-team

I have same issue and new version of this plugin do not support Persian languages in permalinks.

Can you please provide me an example for that?

For me it is working fine, I have tested with “/????-????/” string.

    Hey @sasiddiqui

For me it is working fine, I have tested with “/????-????/” string.

In Persian WordPress installation in 3 different website. it’s not work when i create some link like “/????-????/” and then change it to “/hello-world/” after update post. it’s back to “/????-????/”

@cg-team Do you have time for a slack chat? I am not able to produce this issue on my end and going to release a new version today.

If you have a time then I can review and fix your issue in today’s release.
