Permissions and user roles to create events

I have set up permissions to allow users with specific roles to create and publish events. But when I log into my site as one of those users and then copy and paste the “add new event” link inside my admin dashboard, the user is not allowed to enter that screen.
How do users inside given roles, add events? I get that the front end thing comes only with the paid version, so I anticipated the user being allowed into the My Calendar back-end to create the event.
Help?
