Permissions on assets directory

Using Version 1.5.1 situation happened on 2 different hosts:
- created child theme of twenty twenty three (previous to plugin version 1.5.1) + uploaded
- add a google font (not local font) using create block theme plugin – works (assets directory was created with font directory inside)
- tried to add a new directory to assets directory – permission denied
- unable to delete assets directory – permission denied
- unable to change permissions on assets directory
- i am able to add + remove a separate newly created directory in theme folder so I don’t think the child theme permissions are incorrect.
Am I doing something out of sequence or incorrectly?
?Maybe I need to “copy” the original child theme and start again to add google font? Not sure if it would retain the permission issues.
