• Well I’m not getting anywhere with the $75 help email I sent so maybe someone can shed some light….

For the last 3 weeks we’ve been plagued by 404 errors. They are not on all pages, only on maybe 1/20 of our articles. I can’t determine any pattern. When I clear cache or save the w3 settings the 404s go away. Then in a few hours they come back – always on the same pages that had previous problems – and only for non-logged in visitors.

There have been no changes to the site or server around the time this started and I’ve been using w3 for over a year with no problems of this kind.

I have tinkered with all kinds of settings inside w3, let it run for a night and boom, 404s in the morning every time.

The only clue I have is that about the same time as this 404 problem emerged, we also got hit by a plague of “missed schedule” posts. I have eliminated that problem with a change to the wp-config.php someone recommended, but the 404s are still happening and now started to upset our Google rank.

What the devil could be going on? Could this be a server problem? What can I ask my host to shed some light on this? I am not in a position to start disabling themes and plugins because I can’t sit for 24 hours and wait while the site is in a disabled state. Plust I know that no changes were made for at least a week prior to this problem starting.

  • Hey Nick,
This isn’t a solution for the current version of w3tc, but I was having some issues with the latest version so I’ve been using version 9.2.5 and have had no issues (download archived version here: https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/w3-total-cache.0.9.2.5.zip). It includes a patch for the infamous “Christmas vulnerability”. Hopefully, it will solve your issues, as well.

btw: I appreciate all Frederick does for this wonderful app. Just monitoring the support tickets for the latest version until I’m comfortable making the upgrade.

Also, I have some settings for wt3c that work for my host that may help you at https://www.allthingsdemocrat.com/w3-total-cache-cookieless-subdomain-godaddy-shared-hosting/ (just ignore the politics if you don’t agree).

Interesting, thanks a lot. I’m in the middle of a whole bunch of things including working directly with the w3tc guys, so I’m going to hold off (and keep waking up in the middle of the night to clear the cache) for now…

Perhaps we’ll see a new version of the plugin at some point that will address…

    Many thanks.

Hey atdblog – out of curiosity, when you say “issues” are you talking about 404s? I’m at my wits end on this and willing to try your method. Did you just over-write the new version with the old one? Or is there anything else that needs to be done?
