The many comments in travel forums like Tripadvisor, Lonely Planet etc. about the petrol policies applied by car hire companies are due to the fact, that people do not read the rental conditions before booking a car online.
There are several different policies with slight variations depending on the supplier and the pickup country or location:
- Pickup full and return full. A security deposit may be requested as a guarantee. A penalty may apply in case the car is not returned completely full.
- Pickup full and return empty. There is no refund of unused petrol so return as empty as possible.
- Pickup full and return as you please. The unused petrol is refunded to the customer’s credit card.
- Pickup full and return as you please. The unused petrol is refunded less an administration charge.
These are the most common petrol policies offered by car hire companies worldwide.
