• Using a child theme of Penscratch for my site. After looking at and messing with the CSS a bunch, I’ve given up: does anyone know why photos are resizing and not filling the margins? Most annoyingly with the big “title card” images at the top of the page. Both on the homepage directory…

    And in individual posts…

I’ve messed with the <img> dimensions in the individual posts’ code, I’ve turned off the auto-resize feature in my dashboard, I’ve looked at the child theme template CSS…Nothing seems to make a difference.

I remember previously having figured a workaround (instead of hosting them myself, I’d upload the photos in the WordPress post editor, which seemed to do the trick), but after a battery of plugin updates something got messed. (I thought child themes protected from that?) Any ideas/insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

  • Hi there,

Could you please temporarily disable Jetpack’s Photon module and let me know if that resolves the issue on your site? You can do that by navigating to Jetpack > Settings in your admin area and then searching for Photon.

Let me know the results and we can continue troubleshooting from there. ??

Wow, that did it Siobhan! Thank you so much. What is Photon, and why does it do that? I would’ve never guessed something in Jetpack could be the issue.

    Thank you for confirming!

Photon is an image acceleration service. It serves your site’s images from WordPress.com’s Content Delivery Network (CDN), which means less load on your host and faster images for your site’s visitors.

In order to serve your images, Photon looks at and determines dimensions based on the theme’s code. On rare occasions, it can get those dimensions wrong, which is what happened here.

I wasn’t able to replicate the trouble with Penscratch + Photon + image sizes on my own test site.

Could you please confirm that you’re running on the latest version of both Jetpack and Penscratch? (You can check this by seeing if there any available updates under Dashboard > Updates.)

In addition, what other plugins are you running on your site? Are there any that may impact your images?

I’d like to try and replicate this so I can get the trouble reported back to the Jetpack team.

Just checked –?everything up to date, save for a favicon plugin I don’t use.

Active plugins: Akismet, CSS Plus, footnotes, Jetpack, TinyMCE Advanced, Word Stats, and WP Super Cache.

Thank you for the extra information!

I haven’t been able to replicate just yet but will take a deeper look into the issue and reply back here if I uncover anything.
