  • Waiting to use this to check php 7.4 on my staging version of my company website. Good luck on the update! ??

This is a link to the thread I started about the same topic: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/can-you-update-php-compatibility-checker-so-it-works-with-7-4-please/#post-13170336

Sorry I didn’t see this one before.

Well if it’s taking that much time, then now it seems a bit useless anymore to focus on php 7.4 since the next major release php 8 is coming in 4 months. Will we wait another year for php 8 ? ??

    bump

This is a vote of confidence to the developers of this PHP Compatibility Checker plugin. I understand how changes in dependencies can create unexpected issues and long delays, and feel their pain.

If these really competent devs are having so many issues, I’m very reluctant to update my sites to 7.4. I don’t trust that other developers will be v7.4-compliant. Developers of other plugins would certanly not be as competent to check their own code for v7.4 compatibility because they can’t use this plugin either. So I’d really prefer to disable the v7.4 nag from WP Core until there is a commonly accepted tool to check for compatibility.

All of the “where is it” posts are counter-productive. We’ll get it when we get it. No one is slacking off. They’re all feeling the pressure already. So many “where is it” posts are certainly more of an annoyance than encouragement.

So until we get a vote of confidence from the devs of this fine plugin, personally I’m going to stick with 7.3 – and re-evaluate plugin developers who aren’t even v7.3-compatible. And I’ll follow the same pattern with v8.

For those who say “we need to use the latest PHP”, “our users force us to upgrade”, or “we are under pressure to get the latest security and performance updates”. The simple answer is “the code isn’t ready yet”. Consumer expectations need to meet with reality – you do not have the ability to certify plugins yet so you cannot be sure that 7.4 is a safe move. More pressure here will not make this process move any faster.

Maybe money will help. Or beer, or pizza, or bananas. “But it’s FREE?!?” Well, if you insist on not paying for what you consume then you need to wait for others to provide it in their “free” time. Take that back to your clients who insist on security and performance. And welcome to the FOSS model.

@starbuck – I’m sure they appreciate the vote of support, I’ll add to that.

BUT, compatibility of your own WP site on PHP 7.4 or even 8.0 is likely not a problem. As a developer of a plugin with over 500k installs, we test on a variety of PHP versions. Our sites are running ecommerce plugins and a slew of others on PHP 7.4 already.

The issue here is that the scanner dependencies are different for each version of PHP they need to scan compatibility for. Likely the tooling for PHP 7.4 is drastically different enough that it will essentially require new bridging code to map the existing scanner functionality with all the new tooling.

So – since months still no update? ??

    cheers
