PHP 7 upgrades breaking WordPress

As my various hosting options have upgraded their PHP to version 7, I’m finding all of my WordPress installs break and I need to dial back the version of PHP to 5.6. Is this a WordPress issue that will be fixed eventually, or something to do with my theme(s)? If it’s the theme, is there an easy fix?
