• I am back to a dead stop on my server.

getting flooded by spam bots, makes my pages impossible to load. and the bandwidth goes through the roof.

i ask my isp what can be done, and they point me back to WordPress, or ask me to remove the script.

    what can be done?

    anything?

    this is just terrible.

  • Firstly, if you’re really at the end of the line, turn off comments and rename wp-comments* to x-wp-comments*

Have you tried any of the anti-spam plugins? There are ones that do CAPTCHA (‘enter the text shown in this image..’), which although not the best solution, is fine when one’s desperate.

This should not really be much of a problem. What anti-spam steps have you tried?

Turning off comments will only decative comments for future posts. You’ll have to manually edit each past post if you want to disable comments that way. To just quickly and efficiently kill the comment system, you have to delete wp-comments-post.php. Renaming wp-comments.php does nothing.
