PHPMailer issue after upgrade to WP 5.5/5.6

    I hope to get your kindly support because I’m facing a strange problem on one of my site; I tried several tips after many hours spent reading posts and suggestions wthout success.

    After upgrading to WP 5.5 (and of course to 5.6) I’m getting error every time I try to use the PHPMailer function. If I rollback to WP 5.4.4 everything work well.

    This is the error:
    AH01215: PHP Fatal error: Cannot declare class PHPMailer\\PHPMailer\\PHPMailer, because the name is already in use in /web/htdocs/www.trakracer.it/home/wp-includes/PHPMailer/PHPMailer.php on line 32

    I tried also to use a SMTP Mail plugin but still happens. From email logs, the email seems sent without problems but instead I don’t get it.

    The issue is related to Woocommerce (4.8 installed) too. The customers are not able to finalize the order because they get stuck on checkout page, even the order is placed to the backend. They are also not able to recover password or doing anything related to email functions; the same thing happens to website’s admins.

    The installed theme is Porto; PHP is 7.3.22.
    I’ve another store with exactly the same plugins, hosting and PHP version and it works well with WP 5.6.

    First, make sure that you’re fully updated including your WordPress theme and other plugins.

    If you’re still having issues, then Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

    If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
