I am having issues with uploading images to my website. Their original picture quality is excellent, but once I load it, it becomes fuzzy. It improves depending on the specs she uses, but doesn’t know which ones to use.

My photographer wants to know what is the exact size an image should be in order to achieve maximum sharpness and speed.

She thinks the WordPress is resizing it upon uploading and therefore changing the image sharpness. This size is fuzzy: 2100×1400 quality 12
This size is better: 1800×1200 quality 10
But what is the correct size in order to get the maximum sharpness and speed?

  • If you upload the image in the Media Library and then view the image url for the image, does it look the same as it does locally on your computer before you uploaded it?

My guess is that where ever you are placing the image in your theme is the culprit and not WordPress itself.

If following those steps yields the same results as viewing it locally, your theme must me causing this most likely.

    Hi Chad,

Thank you for your prompt reply. I double checked and the file size and dimensions is the same after I upload is it is originally. At least that’s what it says in my media file.

I am not editing the pics. But I also don’t get the option to edit as your screen showed. I can edit it later once I click on it but I’m not.

I copied the url from the media upload and posted on my computer and it’s clear. But not clear on my actual website.

I will clarify that I am using the images in background instead of as images. So I know that this cannot be responsive and I addressed that by making a duplicate module with the same pic, but not as a background but as an image and then only make that pic visible on devices. The pic that is in the background position, I have it only visible on a computer. But then it should still look good when seen on an actual computer.

From the sounds of it, and because the url works elsewhere, then it likely is a theme issue.

Yes. It does sound like it’s a theme/CSS issue. Are you able to share a link to the page where you have the image placed?

    Hello again Chad,

It actually is NOT a theme problem but was in fact a WordPress issue.

The moderator of my theme asked me to go into Settings/Media and increase the size of the maximum image.

The large size was only set at 1024 x 1024 and my images were 2400 x 1600. It may not have re-rendered it (as shown in the media file), but it couldn’t show a higher resolution than it’s maximum quality and so picture quality was severely compromised.

Once I increased the settings, it was fine.
