Picture as timestamp

I’d like to use a small picture as a timestamp, as done in the theme Buttercream.

My current theme is twentytwelve.

How would one accomplish something like this?
(related note: how would one accomplish anything concerning moving the timestamp to a different location and changing it’s make-up?)
