Picture upload not working – permissions

  • Installed the gallery successfully.
    When trying to upload pictures, I get
    IMG_3133_id1.jpg: Unable to create directory /www/htdocs/xxx/wordpress/wp-content/grand-media/image. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

    Directory grand-media and sub-directory image do not exist, so I create them with permissions 775.

    However then I get
    Directory /www/htdocs/xxx/wordpress/wp-content/grand-media or its subfolders are not writable by the server.

    Why not? Other plugins do not have problems with uploading files.
