• Hi there–I’m having an issue with pictures loading on my travel blog. I’m having no problem uploading them from my computer. However, when I preview my blog page, only about half of the images load, the rest show a little blue box with an X in the middle. I’ve tried resizing them, changing the dimensions, you name it and nothing seems to work. Several of my readers have also contacted me, saying that they’ve experienced similar issues when trying to access my site. What’s more is that even when some of the pictures finally do upload, they often resize themselves, altering from a full size image to a thumbnail. Not sure what’s going on here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi, it looks like you are using Photon, an image acceleration service, for your photos. (Part of the JetPack plugin.) Its job is to decrease the load on your server and load pages/posts more quickly for your visitors, and it does a pretty great job. It can only do so much, though, especially if you have a lot of really large images all vying to load on a page. If your images take more than 10 seconds to load from the server, they’ll be timed out and show as a broken image. You might try uploading smaller versions of your photos and see if that helps. It looks like most of your images on the post I looked at are more than 5000 pixels wide, you could try reducing them to a third of that, say 1600 pixels wide, and see if it helps.

Thanks for the advice. It makes sense about the Photon/Jetpack service. As for the image resizing, I went through a resized the dimensions on most of my images from around 5000 to about 900 (after they were uploaded to WordPress). However, it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. Is there another way to go about resizing? Or will I need to resize them on my computer before they are uploaded to WordPress? Thanks!

    Hi,

After you resized your images, did you replace the current photos in your post with the smaller versions? I looked at a few of them with the browser inspector, and was expecting to see different filenames, but they seem to be the same as before. The original filename would be something like IMG_0162.jpg, and if you edited the photo and selected a smaller version, the new filename would be something like IMG_0162-632×421.jpg.

Maybe you resized the photos another way? How did you go about resizing them?

    Hi Johnna,
I resized each image on WordPress, by editing the original image. I click on the add media button, edit the image/edit the original image, then I scale the image by altering the dimensions, and then save it and insert it into the post. That’s how I’ve always done it, I was/am unaware if there’s another way to scale the images. (I’m sure I sound like a total novice! Sorry!) If you know of an alternative method I’m all ears! Thanks so much for the advice!

I think I may have found a solution to this issues. Last night I found a plug in that automatically resizes photos when you upload them onto WordPress. I did a trial run on one of my posts–Paris Part III: The Metro and Versailles–and all seems to be working well so far. If you wouldn’t mind taking a look on that page to ensure everything is loading properly I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much for all of your help! Cheers!

It looks fantastic, all photos loaded just fine, nice going!
