• I’m new to WordPress and I’ve received messages about “ping backs” via email.

    1. I don’t know what this is. My research found it was related to a blog comment.

    but

    2. I don’t see anything that looks like a comment in wordpress panel only an option to approve or set as spam.. I approved it, but couldn’t find anything after to show what I’d approved or what the hell it was.. help?

That does’nt make any sense to me.. anything for a lamen?.. really.

A doctor that comes and tells you that you have myocardial eschemia leading to tissue breakdown and necrosis further causing cellular hypoxia and anaerobic metabolism would make you say.. huh?
But if he said you had a heart attack.. you would understand all of the above in lamen’s terms.

Pingback lets you notify the author of an article if you link to his article (article on a blog, of course). If the links you include in an article you write on a blog lead to a blog which is pingback-enabled, then the author of that blog gets a notification in the form of a pingback that you linked to his article.

So which bit is hard to understand? There’s no technical jargon in there.

I hav’nt linked anything. I haven’t done anything. I have a blog, I received a ping.. what exactly have I done? How have I linked to any article?

I don’t have any links on my blog. What is the purpose of this? Why would I receive a ping? What am I supposed to do with it? When I “approve” it nothing happens so what is the point? I really don’t understand.

Somebody else may have linked to one of your articles from their site.

Is there anyone out there who can help me?
    phone number to WordPress?

This makes no sense what so ever.. Can someone take pity on what it’s like to be newly learning something???

You’re looking at it in reverse — if you link to something, you SEND a ping. You received a ping, which means someone linked to you. You didn’t do anything to cause it.

Some themes display pings alongside the comments (they usually look something like “so-and-so linked to this blog at such-and-such location”). Some don’t, but sometimes people find them useful for themselves, to know who’s reading.

Until you start publishing more real content, most pings will probably just be the result of random bots crawling around the internet; aka spam.

WordPress doesn’t have phone support — you’re in the right place. Everyone answering questions here is a volunteer, so please do be a bit patient.
