• Hi All.

I’ve been reading up in the Codex on trackbacks and pingbacks and I’ve not had much luck in nailing some of this down for myself.

Would anyone mind helping me out with how they handle pingbacks? My understanding is that some folks are sending me pingbacks that let me know that they have posted something about my blog or my work is that right? I mean, I am getting these legitimate pingbacks but I am also getting spam pingbacks from people trying to exploit them for reasons of seo?

And then if I want to send someone else a Pingback to notify them that I have content on my site that is related to their work I send them a Trackback is that right?

Also, am I correct in seeing that I turn these on and off individually on /each/ post by checking or unchecking “Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page”. ANd then, is there a way to allow Pingbacks to show on my page by only approving the non-spam ones?

    THanks,

    Jon

  • What you note above is basically correct, Pingbacks can be used improperly (most search engines derank sites that do this) and it is quite important to not just allow all…while many can be perfectly OK, it’s the ones that are actually links to porn and/or maliscious sites that are bad…I review all comments and all pingbacks for bad links – that said, a site can change to be a bad site (on purpose) or be hacked!
