• Sorry, could anyone please enlighten me on pingbacks and trackbacks.
What are the difference and also what are they used for?
Sorry for the amatuerish questions, but i guess my ignorance shows.
Do appreciate what ever help i get though.
    Thanks

Podz, i tried out the track back and pingback on your strappy article.
Is that how its supposed to work?
i could see that you have two comments by me straight away.
My apologies for the double entry.

I just got a pingback for the first time since joining WP. The codex link above seems to say that a pingback is a way for another person to tell me they linked to my post. That’s all well & good but…I still don’t understand the diff. bet. a trackback & a pingback. Anyone? Maybe it’s just too early in the AM for me to follow the intricacies of the whole thing.

I understand how you create a trackback, but how do you create a pingback?

To try to answer my own question…

Is this essentially the Discussion Options setting that controls pingbacks?

“# Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.) “

If so, then pingbacks make sense to me because they’re automatic whereas trackbacks are manual. Am I going in the right direction?

Does this setting mean that my blog attempts to notify EVERY site that I link to including sites like the New York Times, etc. Or will it only notify other blog sites or what?

It notifies sites that you link to in your posts, not any other links.

Sites that do not support pings could lead to a slowing when you click Publish. When you publish, you automatically ping ‘Pingomatic’ and every other service you have in the Update Services box – which is why if you have a lot there – which you do not need – you will again see slow posting.

I have pingomatic & technorati as automatic update services pings but nothing else.

Regarding what you said about sites I link to in my posts–I link often to the NYT within my posts but I can’t see what good it would be to notify the site that I’ve linked to them. Would this feature attempt to do that?

I just noticed the word “Weblogs” in the quotation above (it’s late, what can I say?). So I think I’ve answered my own question & it would NOT ping any sites except blogs, which is cool.

Generally, this seems like a feature I’d like activated. Is there any reason not to?
