Pitfalls Of Large MU Sites?

  • Hi,

    I am in the process of developing a very large project which would allow users to create there own sites and manage the content. I had been planning on hiring a developer to create a unique platform for this, but it’s dawned on me that wordpress MU may be a better way to go.

    I’m not all that savvy with the tech side of things but can anyone tell me if this is a bad idea for a large site?

    Let’s say I plan on having many tens of thousands of users eventually? What do I have to be aware of? Will this inevitably be a problem or can it be done?

    I’ll be hiring a developer to help me with this but I wanted to get a handle on this myself so I could decide o the best platform for this project.

    Are there any trusted wordpress MU consultants out there I could turn to who have experience with large projects like this?

    WordPress.COM uses multisite. They have *millions* of users.

    What you need to start learning is how to scale databases and eventually servers.

    There are plenty of people out there capable of building this type of thing. The difficulty is in finding them.

    Thanks guys. Anyone know of a good place to start in terms of finding a consultant and/or developer who could help me with this?

    Also, do you know how difficult it is, or what kind of problems it causes when you start to scale databases? I am pretty ignorant with this stuff and am just trying to gauge whether or not Mu is the right platform and what kind of problems I might encounter.

    Does anyone know how many users an MU site can support without running into problems? Assuming each one was creating just a small/moderate amount of content. Maybe 10 – 50 pages each.
