Pixelated BG Image

Why does the BG image become pixelated and grainy looking? I am using a 1920 x 1200 image @72dpi converted from a 300dpi original. The 72 dpi displays with sharp clarity on any monitor I test it on, but when applied as a BG is looks awful. Is there a reason for this? The attached SS is from the preview mode, but it looks the same on the site https://www.gamersforfreespeech.org and it currently active there for you to see.
