Place external images in posts

How do you include images in a post that do not reside on your domain?

I have tried putting the exact website address in the Add image url, but the image doesn’t show. Is it necessary to upload that image from that site onto our own domain for it to work?

Wouldn’t that constitute a violation of copyright and stuff? Isn’t there any other way?
